Born on September 9, 1974, in the serene town of Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, Vikram Batra’s life was one of purpose and patriotism. His early education was marked by excellence not just in academics but also in sports and extracurricular activities. A green belt in karate and a national-level table tennis player, Batra’s leadership qualities shone early.

His military journey began with the Indian Army’s 13th battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles. During the Kargil War, Captain Batra was instrumental in recapturing strategic peaks from the enemy. His fearless leadership in the face of danger led to the successful capture of Point 5140, a mission that turned the tide of the war.

The call sign ‘Shershaah’ (Lion King) was apt for a man of his courage. It was during the treacherous ascent to recapture Point 4875 that Captain Batra, leading from the front, made the ultimate sacrifice. His last words, “Yeh Dil Maange More!” (The heart desires more!), became a rallying cry for the nation’s armed forces.
